The community legal sector provides high-quality free legal advice partnered with a holistic care model that allows people to properly recover from the challenges they face. Through increased access to justice, people live happier, healthier, more fulfilled lives and actively participate in our communities.
But unfortunately, the community legal sector is currently under-resourced. Community legal centres struggle to meet the levels of demand, leaving some without the critical help they need.
We acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands across Australia. We join with other voices calling for the immediate implementation of all the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and for the Australian Government to take urgent steps to end systemic human rights violations against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We support raising the age of legal responsibility to at least fourteen and more accountability for racist policing.
